Academic careers

Emergency and critical care avatar

Our senior team includes an NIHR senior investigator and several experienced University academics, offering a variety of support measures for academic careers. We act as PhD supervisors, examiners and advisors across multiple Higher Education Institutions in the UK and abroad. We support and examine MSc students across a variety of training programs. We support academic career placements within the integrated NIHR training scheme and have previously hosted NIHR programme fellows from foundation stage through to clinical lecturer. Within the last five years, our group has successfully competed for a Deans award from The University of Manchester, a FICM/NIHR early years research award and an NIHR Senior Clinical Practitioner and Researcher award.

We offer support to medical and allied health professionals new to research; we have supported multiple medical trainees and advanced practitioners to success at competitive research grant application through MAHSC, RCEM and the NIHR; we sponsor local internships and secondments; and we offer opportunities to participate in cutting edge clinical trials through mentorship within Associate PI and PI pipeline schemes.

We have research leads working across a variety of clinical areas aligned to acute care with job planned time and a broad development portfolio. We host research fellow posts at 50% non-clinical time aligned to a variety of acute care specialties and we host international fellows with trauma research interests on our Malaysian programme.

We offer regular opportunities for academic outputs for early career researchers, including contribution to our Journal update series in the Emergency Medicine Journal, Best Evidence Topic reports, narrative reviews and presentation opportunities at international conferences, including the ICS SOA, RCEM ASC, ISTH and many others.

We offer secondment opportunities for acute care staff within our nursing research teams and support link nurse placements for those wishing to understand research activity in more detail.
