Respiratory research in Salford covers lung conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and lung fibrosis. We are also involved in studies designed to deliver better care and personalised treatment for people with allergies and infection. The department significantly contributes to regional and national research of Acute Covid 19 therapies, and more recently, research into Long Covid.

Salford respiratory research is conducted in the Chest Clinic and the Clinical Trials Unit but also involves hospital patients and community patients with a variety of lung diseases. We have taken part in multi-centre trials across Greater Manchester as well as UK-wide and international studies.

Salford Royal’s Department of Respiratory Medicine has contributed to UK and European Nebuliser Guidelines, and to the UK National Asthma Guideline.

Salford is one of two centres which led the development of UK guidelines for emergency oxygen use and Salford played a major part in the Greater Manchester team that undertook the world’s first ever trial of anti-fungal therapy for patients with asthma and allergy to a fungus.
