Our Donal O’Donoghue Renal Research Centre embeds research and academic advancement into clinical practice, with dedicated research sessions for 15 consultant nephrologists, 5 clinical research fellows, a Professor of Nursing and nurse and AHP internships.
Key themes aim to improve diagnosis, care and treatment for kidney patients and there are collaborative basic science projects with our local Universities.
The NCA Director of Research, Professor Phil Kalra, has had leading national roles in renal care and research and Professor Smeeta Sinha is the National Clinical Director of Renal Medicine.
Professor Darren Green, and Drs Tina Chrysochou, Dimitris Poulikakos and Rosie Donne all have regional or national roles in renal improvement science.
The main renal centre is based at Salford Royal and there are dialysis/renal care centres at Oldham, Rochdale, Bolton and Wigan. Salford Royal is also the home of the Salford Kidney Study which has one of the largest cohorts of patients with chronic kidney disease in the world with detailed data and biobanked samples for multiomic research.
The renal research team works closely with patients to promote research, especially with the Greater Manchester Kidney Information Network and Kidney Research UK .
