Salford Royal is a specialist centre for systemic sclerosis and Raynaud’s phenomenon (Dr Michael Hughes and Dr Muditha Samaranayaka).

We host the University of Manchester Rheumatology Microvascular Imaging Laboratory with the goal of translation of research to improve clinical practice.

We have international expertise in inflammatory myopathy (Professor Hector Chinoy, Dr James Lilleker) with the tertiary referral Adult Neuromuscular clinic.  We are a Centre for Excellence for Paget’s disease (Professor Terry O’Neill).

We have international research leadership in musculoskeletal epidemiology including drug safety (Professors Terry O’Neill and Will Dixon, and Dr Meghna Jani) as well as innovation in digital health research (Professor Will Dixon).

Our current studies include research into:

  •  Osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Active Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma)
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Genetic studies
  • Myositis studies
  • Pain studies
  • A study for the relatives of the patients with RA
