Our research

Emergency and critical care avatar

Our strategy group currently lead multiple projects in chief investigator or lead roles and we also work with national and international colleagues on multiple projects as collaborating investigators. Some examples are listed right.

Our wider team of clinicians deliver internationally prioritised research studies within our local population, with high impact publication and practice changing impact. In the last 10 years, over 28 medical and allied health professional colleagues have trained to Principal Investigator level and led national projects at site. Recent examples include:

HEMOTION: Haemoglobin thresholds in Traumatic Brain Injury

BLINGIII: Antimicrobial continuous infusions vs. standard bolus dosing

CRYOSTAT2: Cryoprecipitate in the management of major haemorrhage in trauma

CRASH3: TXA in traumatic brain injury

HALT-IT: TXA in upper GI bleeding

ADAPT-SEPSIS: Use of biomarkers for antimicrobial stewardship in sepsis

SOS: Osmotherapy in Traumatic Brain Injury

UK ROX: Oxygen thresholds in critical care

T4P: Platelet thresholds for low risk bleeding procedures in critical care

SWIFT: Whole blood transfusion for major haemorrhage in trauma

UK STAR: Plaster cast vs. Brace for non-surgical management of Achilles tendon rupture

These projects change practice and have been published in high impact journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, the BMJ, Lancet Journals, JAMA and many more. When pooled together, publications from our group include >800 pubmed indexed articles to date. Further examples can be found at the ORCID ID webpages for Professors Dark, Lecky and Horner.
