Research practitioner Danyal Mohammed gave students at Rochdale Sixth Form College the opportunity to delve into the world of research when he supported their work experience week.
Working with a group of 20 students over three days, he showcased how research provides the evidence for diagnosis, treatment and care. He then tasked five sub-groups with developing a presentation on different studies using patient information sheets. He drew up a worksheet to guide them and worked closely with each group as they analysed the studies and their potential benefits.
With each group putting together well-considered presentations, the college has now asked Dany to return in future to speak with health and social care students and to contribute to further work experience weeks.
His support was the latest in a series of events building relationships with leading sixth form colleges and schools in the area, including one for healthcare students last year at Rochdale with NCA allied health professionals. Our community research team (pictured) have also offered students in Rochdale and Oldham the chance to take part in the Genes & Health study, the world’s largest community-based study of genetics and health in British people of Bangladeshi and Pakistani heritage. It aims to improve health in people from these communities across the UK and globally.
Nearly 150 students at Oldham Sixth Form College have taken part in either Genes & Health or the Improving Black Health Outcomes (IBHO) study.
Alongside young people at primary and secondary schools around Greater Manchester, they have also been able to join the Elsa study, screening children and young people aged two to 17 for type 1 diabetes.
