Four NCA staff among Greater Manchester Clinical Research Awards winners

Four Northern Care Alliance staff were among the winners at the prestigious 2018 Greater Manchester Clinical Research Awards.

The awards recognise excellence in health research delivery and are organised by NIHR Clinical Research Network, Greater Manchester (CRN GM) in association with Sanofi.

We were delighted to have 10 individuals and teams shortlisted for the awards, from a record 230 nominations. Special congratulations go to:

  • Mfon Sam, Research Nurse at North Manchester. Mfon won the Best Community Research Contribution award for her work to raise awareness of research in black and minority ethnic communities.
  • Rachel Newport, Research Midwife working across the Royal Oldham, Fairfield General, North Manchester General and Rochdale Infirmary. Rachel won Research Midwife of the Year for her dedication to improving the lives of women and babies though research.
  • Deborah Hall, Senior Research Nurse at North Manchester, who won the special NHS@70 Research Hero title for her 39 years in the NHS. In particular, she has made a major contribution to diabetes research.
  • Katie Doyle, R&I Manager for the Northern Care Alliance, who was recognised as the Outstanding Network Ambassador in a special presentation by Debbie Vinsun, CRN GM Chief Operating Officer, and  Professor Martin Gibson, CRN GM Clinical Director.

The awards took place during the week in which CRN GM passed its annual recruitment target with months to spare. Greater Manchester has now recruited more than 47,100 people into 784 studies across a wide range of different conditions.

Debbie Vinsun said: “This is a marvellous achievement and typifies the kind of dedication and excellence that was celebrated throughout the awards night.  It was our pleasure to recognise the achievements of each of our finalists during the ceremony in this special 70th anniversary year for the NHS.”

Roger Spencer, Chief Executive of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, also paid tribute to Professor Martin Gibson for his work in driving research and innovation in Greater Manchester over the past 10 years. Professor Gibson is also Chair of Research and Innovation at the Northern Care Alliance and Chief Executive Officer of NorthWest EHealth.
