Professor Darren Green has used an interview in The BMJ to highlight the barriers he faced getting into medicine, his connection with patients and support for colleagues at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.
In the article ‘The consultant nephrologist who uses his experience of deprivation to help patients ‘ he says the most rewarding part of his career is: “The relationships that you build up. You get to know your patients really well over years. You value their health and wellbeing professionally, but you also value them on a personal level. I enjoy just sitting down with them and having a good natter. It’s a privileged position to be in.”
He feels the same about his colleagues. “If you’ve got that sort of warmth and sense of teamwork and belonging with your patients, you probably have that with your colleagues as well. I love working with the team I’ve got.”
