Kidney specialist Professor Donal O’Donoghue has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Professor O’Donoghue, who has worked at Salford Royal for more than 25 years, has been recognised for his dedicated service to kidney patients.
He was the National Clinical Director for kidney care from 2007 to 2013, working to improve services in vascular and kidney care across the NHS, and is currently medical director of Health Innovation Manchester and President of the Renal Association. As a world renowned researcher who has shaped modern nephrology, he has particular interests in the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease, progression of glomerular disease, renal anaemia, models of service delivery and clinical outcomes. He is also Professor of Renal Medicine at The University of Manchester.
He has worked to raise awareness of how common kidney disease is and how devastating it can be – but also to make other health professionals, patients and families aware of the modern care and treatments that can help those affected.
He’s keen to see patients sharing in decisions about their care and has an interest in behaviour interventions – such as preventing obesity and stopping smoking – and their role in delaying kidney disease progression.
Professor O’Donoghue said of his honour: “I am delighted and humbled to be included in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to kidney patients. Kidney disease affects 850 million people worldwide – much of it preventable. It has been my privilege and pleasure to work with a countless number of brilliant and dedicated colleagues and patients locally, nationally and internationally to raise awareness, increase choices and improve care for people with kidney disease.”
