Salford’s advanced practitioners are supporting a new emergency department study to identify the best way to deal with non-displaced fractures of the tibia.
Consultant advanced clinical practitioner Katie Trigg is the local principal investigator for the UK-wide ToTs study, which is funded by the NIHR and sponsored by Sheffield Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Advanced nurse practitioners and the consultant team from the PANDA unit, as well as the acute research delivery team, will also be involved in the work.
It will recruit 494 children who have had fractures because of a fall or twisting injury and will compare outcomes of two different approaches – using casts or boots to immobilise the leg or managing the injury with observation and pain relief.
