Death of Professor Donal O’Donoghue OBE

We are sad to report the death of Professor Donal O’Donoghue OBE on Sunday 3 January.

Northern Care Alliance NHS Group Chief Executive Raj Jain said: “Today we heard the terribly sad news of the death of our well-known and well-regarded friend and colleague, Professor Donal O’Donoghue OBE.

“Professor O’Donoghue was a kidney specialist consultant and research Professor who worked and dedicated most of his professional career to Salford Royal for more than 25 years.

“He was the National Clinical Director for kidney care from 2007 to 2013, working to improve services in vascular and kidney care across the NHS, and was Medical Director of Health Innovation Manchester, President of the British Renal Society, President of the Renal Association, and Registrar for The Royal College of Physicians. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 2018 in recognition for his dedicated service to kidney patients.

“Professor O’Donoghue played an important role in our Research and Innovation work with the interest of patients at the centre of everything he did, not only for Salford and the NCA but regionally and nationally. As a well-respected clinician and a world renowned researcher, he has without doubt shaped modern nephrology and has driven medical advancement and research in kidney care.

“He worked tirelessly in his capacity locally, nationally and internationally to raise awareness of how common kidney disease is and how devastating it can be – but also to make other health professionals, patients and families aware of the modern care and treatments that can help those affected.

“He was such a professional, kind and genuine man, who worked with and for his patients, championing their access to excellence in their kidney care and experience at the highest level.

“Although based out of our Salford Royal site, Professor O’Donoghue was well known and a popular colleague across all of our sites and also outside of the NCA across Greater Manchester and the country with peers and other professional bodies. He will be sorely missed by many people and his work and contribution to kidney care and research will always be remembered.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Professor O’Donoghue’s family. Our specialist Bereavement team is supporting his family and his close colleagues during what is understandably a very upsetting and difficult time for them.”
